Description:

Jim Muhlenbruch is an attorney with the State Farm Corporate Law Department. Jim graduated from Valparaiso University in 1982 and from St. Louis University Law School in 1985. After working for a federal judge for 18 months, Jim began working with the Law Firm of Evans and Dixon in St. Louis, MO working on all aspects of civil litigation including discovery, motion practice, trial work and appeals. Jim was a trial attorney for more than 13 years before starting his work with State Farm in Bloomington. He has worked for State Farm for 11 years. The first three years of Jim’s work at State Farm were dealing with property and casualty litigation involving claims for bad faith and punitive damages. Jim has been working with Life and Health matters for 8 years and works on both litigation and non-litigation matters.

Jim’s presentation, File Documentation advice and Other Legal Tips to Keep You OUT of the Witness Chair, will concentrate on good file documentation practices with specific file language examples that arose in litigation. The presentation will also touch on special concerns that arise related to file documentation in suspected fraud cases.

Bradley Nahrstadt is an Equity Partner with the litigation firm of Williams Montgomery & John Ltd. in Chicago, IL, concentrating his practice in the defense of product liability, professional liability and insurance law cases in state and federal courts around the country. Brad currently serves as regional counsel for a large automotive parts manufacturer and one of the nation’s leading optical manufacturers. He is the award-winning author of more than 60 articles on various areas of trial practice and discovery which have appeared in many of the leading legal publications in the country. In 2006, Brad was recognized as one of the 40 Illinois Attorneys Under Forty to Watch by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company.

Brad’s presentation, The Devil is in the Details: Complying with the Illinois Unfair Claim Settlement Practices Act and Related Statutes, will discuss the application of the Illinois Unfair Claims Settlement Practices Act to a variety of claim handling practices. Using real world examples and a discussion of relevant ccase llaw to provide advice on complying with the Act in order to avoid claims for bad faith failure to settle.
